Help for families with Autstic Children - New York State
My name is Saundra, and I have an autistic son, who is 7 years old. Living in NY I was trying to find any kind of help for my my autistic child and my other children. Most of the things are listed below are for New York State. At the time we were looking for anything from activities that were low in cost to anything that would help us save money. We were looking for assistance because my son was a bolter. My husband and I both work but do not make a large income.
Respite
As any other parent with an autistic child knows, it is very difficult at times to get a sitter. If you have an autistic child, you hopefully have a service coordinator. Or in the process of getting one. If you need to get one, it is a very lengthy process. My son went to Boces preschool and they had a class about obtaining a service co-ordinator. Please talk to your childs teacher, psycologist, or autism specialist, and they can get started to where to go in your area, to begin the process. They do everything to make sure you child is getting everything they need, including advocacy. My son's service coodinator is through Depaul-Avenue to Independence in Rochester. One of the things my son is eligible for Respite. Respite is a when your service coordinator will assist you in getting a baby sitter for your special child. These babysitters are trained to work with your special needs child. You have the option to go out. We all need a break sometimes. Or you can stay home, catch up on your house work, or take a well deserved nap. Your service coordinator will tell you how many hours a month, you are eligible for. This is a free service.
Reimbursement
Since up above I spoke of your service coordinator, did you know that you can all or partial reimbursement for items you purchased for your autistic child. This comes in handy with purchasing Pecs books, educational toys, weighted vests and more. Talk to your service coordinator for what items qualify for your child.
New York State Parks
Did you know that you can get free access to all NYS Parks, if your child has a disability. We take Jacob to Hamlin Beach all the time, and we get free admittance, due to Jacob having autism. Jacob loves the beach. We recieved the pass about 3 weeks, after we applied. You may pick up the application at any NYS Park, but you may not get free admittion until after you send in the application.
An Access Pass permits a resident of New York State with a permanent disability free use of parks, historic sites and recreational facilities operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and HistoricPreservation and the Department of Environmental Conservation. The passholder may have free use of facilities operated by these offices forwhich there is normally
a charge (for example; parking, camping, greens fees and swimming). To qualify for an Access Pass, an applicant must bea resident of New York State and must provide proof of disability in the form of certification from the appropriate agency, or by verification ofdisability by a physician.

Jacob is autistic mod-severe. Two years ago we became very concerned about Jacob having issues in parking lots. Jacob would try to bolt or sometimes breaks down in the parking lot, when there is a lot of activity. We always hold Jacobs hand, but he would always try to pull away. When we told our concerns to Jacob's Doctor, he sent us the form to go to the DMV all filled out. With our situation, he wanted Jacob to be safe. Even now Jacob still tries to pulls away or breaks down in the parking lot.

Possible Discounted Rate at YMCA
At our YMCA's in Rochester, NY Financial Assistance is available to anyone based on family income, number of household members, and the availability of funds. Currently my family has a discount membership. Our family pays $25 a month for a family of 5. It is a great way for the kids to get out and play. Jacob enjoys it there because he can run, climb and play. Our YMCA also has 2 huge pools and a out door activity center. All information on the financial is kept confidential. Check you local YMCA for discounted rates.
